Cardiff Metropolitan University

On November 1, 2011, the college officially became Cardiff Metropolitan University. In 1996, the college received university status and became known as the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC). Before this Cardiff University was known as the Institute of Higher Education. In 1992 it gained independence from the local council. The history of the university dates back as far as 1865 with the opening of the School of Art in the city center of Cardiff. Art School merged with Cardiff Training College, Cardiff College of Food Technology and Trade and Llandaff Technical College in 1976 as South Glamorgan Institute of Higher Education. Cardiff Metropolitan University campus operates from three schools in Cardiff (Llandaff, Cyncoed and Howard Gardens) with one additional campus residence halls on the campus of Plas Gwyn.
